In Hawaii, Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiians) have celebrated the season of Makahiki for generations. The season begins when the stars called the Makali'i (known to us as the Pleaides) rise out of the ocean during sunset. Makali'i means "Little Eyes" in 'Olelo Hawaii, as these stars look down upon us as we look up to them. This beautiful cluster of stars is honored throughout the season of Makahiki and all agree to a time of peace and harmony, laying down their weapons. It is a time of rest, celebration, and games. I'm only just learning about Makahiki, alas I thought I'd share how this beautiful tradition has touched my heart so deeply, and how I gaze evermore upward to the stars in the sky this special time of year.
