For me, this jumps from mwic's 1984 cold war fear to the 2024 ai war fear. Hear me out. The way the voice of protest is digitally affected could mean how our identities are being lost in the ones and zeros.
This has a (good) unsettling feeling, it's bleak and cold and that's kind of how fear gets us, though.
All to say, well done, I love hearing how the song is transforming :-)
Whew! You gave me goosebumps! (This doesn't often happen when listening to a song with my own voice.) I love how you played the banjolele part on the piano... it created this extra-eerie vibe... and such a great contrast with the distorted vocals and explosive drums.
Ever heard of the poet Andrea Gibson? Their work used to be really (awesomely) dark, but after an ongoing experience with cancer, it's now become... for lack of better words... enlightening. I was listening to a podcast interview and they said something like "I'm not here to save or change the world, I'm here to love it. Lose the attachement to outcome. Do what you can and still love the world. Imagine the world as it can be. If we can't imagine it, we can't create it." Of course, they're not the first to say this type of thing, but it reached me deeply... and helps me embrace my lightness.
Anyway... I'm with you all and it's beautiful to connect with you through music.
You and Stefan really spotted the ambiguity in the lyric. There's room for poptimism and despair in it.
I love the beatles and Bob Marley about as much as I love anyone, but have never loved repeating some variation of "it's gonna be alright" as a chorus.
'Cause probably it won't, at least for some. .
but I read that Dwight Freaking Eisenhower thought that abolition of war might be possible...
