I wrote this over 10 years ago when my main music project was a band with Rich Ratvasky called Team Smile and Nod. We released this track in 2021 (https://teamsmileandnod.bandcamp.com/track/when-the-bones-are-dry), but it was never shared on ccMixter... it must have been waiting for MixterPlus!

It's a dark and dismal murder ballad... do you know who it's about?

ooh, a puzzle! I thought about the death of Eric Garner, but then looked up the date since you said this was written "over 10 years ago" and Garner was still alive ..
So, assuming it was topical, I'm going to guess a killing revealed in the Snowden leaks ... final answer

Ooo... such good guesses! Topical it is, Snowden related, it is not. Care to guess again? (One of the big reasons this accused person was not convicted really was because the bones of the victim were dry, making it nearly impossible for the medical examiner to get the needed evidence.)
